While price of conventional fuel continue to escalate the perspective of more efficient ways of utilizing different forms of renewable energy is becoming even more compelling and Green Energy is surely going to be a subject to capture our attention in coming times. There is no doubt that achieving economical viable configurations in Wind Renewable Energy Generation Systems has to consider the most advanced research in both aerodynamics and control electronics.
Adaptive Control Systems are just another layer of technological improvement meant to optimize various parameters of future generating systems.
Besides well-known constructive challenges posed by the Darrieus type of wind turbines, one has to consider the functional limitations resulting from such fixed geometry. Most notable the ambiguity of the starting process, the effectiveness range limited to the TSR= 2.0 – 5.0 domain and the vibration spectrum caused by periodic stalling of the airfoils when operating at low TSR.
Amazing to see the scaled down prototype of Mechanen AVAWT performing in front of a table ventilator running at normal speed. And it doesn't matter if the fan changes direction or intensity - the turbine will simply evaluate the new condition and adapt the control strategy to the new situation.
